Kindle Paperwhite 12th generation: an honest review and comparison with previous generations
The Kindle Paperwhite is the best-selling e-reader in Spain and, probably, in the world. The 12th generation, launched in 2024, maintains Amazon’s undisputed market leadership. But is it really the best choice for you? What has changed compared to the 11th generation? Is the Signature Edition worth the extra cost? Here’s the review, free from marketing hype.
What the Kindle Paperwhite does better than any other e-reader
If you only read books — whether you buy them on Amazon or use Kindle Unlimited — the Kindle Paperwhite is the winner for three specific reasons:
The Amazon ecosystem. You buy a book on Amazon and it appears on your Kindle in under 30 seconds. You request a free sample, see how the book reads, then make up your mind. Synchronise your reading progress across your Kindle, mobile and tablet — start a chapter on the sofa, finish it on the bus. This experience is light years ahead of Kobo or PocketBook.
Integrated shop. There’s no need to download books via a cable or convert file formats. You simply connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi and buy directly from the device. For non-technical users, this is the difference between enjoying a good read and struggling with the device.
Kindle Unlimited. €9.99/month for unlimited access to millions of books. If you read more than one book a month, you’ll recoup the cost of the service. It only works on Kindles.
What it does NOT do well: open formats such as EPUB. If you buy books from sources other than Amazon (DRM-free, Spanish digital bookshops, public libraries offering digital loans), you’ll either have to convert the files or put up with certain limitations. To do this, PocketBook Era It is objectively better.

What has changed compared to the 11th generation?
The 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite, launched in late 2024, is the most substantial update since the 10th generation. The key changes:
Larger screen (from 6.8″ to 7″)
The increase from 6.8 to 7 inches seems small on paper, but you really notice it when using the device. More text per page, fewer clicks to turn the page – better for dense texts such as essays or academic books. The resolution remains at 300 ppi (print resolution), so the quality per pixel remains the same.
Pages that are 25% faster
Amazon promised «the fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever» and, for once, it’s not just marketing hype. Turning pages, opening a new book and browsing your library is noticeably snappier than on the 11th generation model. For anyone upgrading from an older Paperwhite, the improvement is immediately noticeable.
Greater contrast
The new screen improves the contrast between the background and the text. The text appears darker and the background lighter. It may seem like a minor change, but after hours of reading, your eyes will thank you for it — especially in low light.
12-week course (previously 10 weeks)
An extra couple of weeks’ battery life. In practice, this means charging the Kindle four times a year instead of five. Negligible for everyday use, but useful for long journeys.
USB-C (formerly Micro-USB)
At last. You can charge your Kindle using the same cable as your mobile, AirPods Pro, iPad or laptop. Goodbye to Micro-USB, which was only ever used for the Kindle.
Kindle Paperwhite vs Basic Kindle (11th gen): is it worth the extra cost?
| Feature | Kindle 11th generation (basic) | Kindle Paperwhite 12th generation |
|---|---|---|
| Price at Macy’s | from ~€99 | 179€ |
| Screen | 6 inches, 300 ppi | 7 inches, 300 ppi |
| Lighting | White light (non-adjustable) | Adjustable warm light |
| Water resistance | ❌ No | ✅ Yes (IPX8) |
| Battery | 6 weeks | 12 weeks |
| Storage | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| Charge | USB-C | USB-C |
The Paperwhite is worth the extra €80 if:
- You’re reading in bed and need a warm light (the light on the basic Kindle is very cold, which strains your eyes more at night)
- You can read it on the beach, by the pool or in the bath (the basic version isn’t waterproof)
- Do you want a bigger screen (7″ vs 6″)?
- You read a lot, and the basic model’s 6-week battery life isn’t long enough for you
The basic Kindle is sufficient if:
- You occasionally read indoors where there is plenty of light
- You take great care of your devices
- You’re on a tight budget and would prefer to save €80
For most regular readers, the Paperwhite is the right choice. You really notice the extra €80 in your day-to-day use.
Kindle Paperwhite vs Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition
| Feature | Standard Paperwhite | Paperwhite Signature Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Price | 179€ | ~229€ |
| Screen | 7″, 300 ppi | 7″, 300 ppi |
| Storage | 16 GB | 32 GB |
| Lighting | Manual | Self-adjusting |
| Wireless charging | ❌ No | ✅ Yes (Qi) |
| Announcements | With adverts | No adverts |
Is the Signature Edition worth it? For most people, no. The extra €50 gets you: double the storage (16 GB already holds over 5,000 books – hardly anyone ever reaches that limit), auto-adjusting lighting (it’s comfortable but not a game-changer) and wireless charging (not very useful on a device you only charge every 12 weeks).
The real reason to pay for the Signature Edition is get rid of the adverts. If you find the ad banners on the lock screen annoying, pay the extra. If you don’t mind them, save yourself the money.
Who is the Kindle Paperwhite for?
It’s perfect if:
- You mainly read on Amazon or Kindle Unlimited. A completely hassle-free experience when it comes to buying and reading.
- You want a device just for reading. No distractions from social media or notifications.
- You can read anywhere. Water-resistant, 12-week battery life, lightweight (211g) — the perfect travel companion.
- You don’t care about the closed ecosystem. You accept that your library is hosted by Amazon.
It is NOT for you if:
- You buy books from places other than Amazon. EPUB files cannot be opened natively; you’ll need to convert them. Take a look PocketBook Era instead.
- You use the public library. In Spain, digital libraries (eBiblio, GreenLib) lend books in EPUB format with Adobe DRM — the Kindle does not support them. Kobo and PocketBook do.
- You want a bigger screen. The Kindle Scribe (10.2″) is the one to go for if you prefer a tablet format for reading manuals or technical books.
The advantage of buying it in Tenerife
Let’s be honest here: For e-readers, the savings on IGIC are negligible. Amazon sells the Kindle Paperwhite for €169.99 in mainland Spain and for €179 at Macys Digital Tenerife (Kindle Paperwhite 12th generation in black). The difference between 21% VAT and 7% IGIC isn't worth it on such low prices.
| Product | Amazon ES | Macy's Tenerife |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle Paperwhite 16GB | 169,99€ | 179€ |
When it is actually worth buying it in Tenerife:
- You’re on holiday on the island and your e-reader breaks → an immediate solution without having to wait for it to be posted
- You’re going to buy other products where the IGIC does make a difference (iPad, MacBook, iPhone) and you’ll make the most of your trip to the shop
- Would you prefer face-to-face support in Spanish or English rather than a postal service?
If you are coming from outside the EU (United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway), bear in mind that there is a difference compared to your country: in the UK, the Paperwhite costs £159.99 (~€187) plus 20% VAT, which comes to around €224 in total. Buying it in Tenerife saves you ~€45 and easily falls within your £390 duty-free allowance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Kindle Paperwhite last before it needs replacing?
With normal use and basic care, 5–7 years. The battery loses capacity over time (after 5–6 years, it may only hold a charge for 6 weeks instead of 12), but the device remains functional. Amazon provides software support for the lifetime of the product.
Can I read books that I didn’t buy on Amazon?
Yes, but with some limitations. EPUB files need to be converted to Kindle format (KFX or AZW3) using software such as Calibre. PDF files can be read, but the experience is mediocre: the font size cannot be adjusted, and the text is displayed page by page rather than adapting to the screen. If you frequently buy books from outside Amazon, you might want to consider another e-reader.
Does the Kindle work without Wi-Fi?
Yes, once you’ve downloaded the books, they work offline indefinitely. You only need Wi-Fi to buy new books or synchronise your reading progress.
Does it look good in the sun?
Yes. The e-ink screen is one of the few that actually looks better in direct sunlight — it doesn’t suffer from glare like the LCD/OLED screens on tablets. It’s ideal for reading on the beach or on a terrace.
Is it worth upgrading from an 11th-generation Kindle Paperwhite to the 12th generation?
Only if your old Kindle is having problems (a worn-out battery, a screen with marks, slow response times). If your 11th-generation model is working fine, the improvements in the 12th generation don’t justify €179. Wait another 2–3 generations before upgrading.
Which accessories are useful?
A case with a magnetic flap that turns the Kindle on and off when you open and close it (~€25–40). That’s it. You don’t need anything else. The screens don’t need a screen protector because they’re matt and quite durable.
