But is it really the best choice for you? What has changed compared to the 11th generation? Is the Signature Edition worth the extra cost? What the Kindle Paperwhite does better than any other e-reader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you only read books \u2014 whether you buy them on Amazon or use Kindle Unlimited \u2014 the Kindle Paperwhite is the winner for three specific reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Amazon ecosystem.<\/strong> You buy a book on Amazon and it appears on your Kindle in under 30 seconds. You request a free sample, see how the book reads, then make up your mind. Synchronise your reading progress across your Kindle, mobile and tablet \u2014 start a chapter on the sofa, finish it on the bus. This experience is light years ahead of Kobo or PocketBook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Integrated shop.<\/strong> There\u2019s no need to download books via a cable or convert file formats. You simply connect your Kindle to Wi-Fi and buy directly from the device. For non-technical users, this is the difference between enjoying a good read and struggling with the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kindle Unlimited.<\/strong> \u20ac9.99\/month for unlimited access to millions of books. If you read more than one book a month, you\u2019ll recoup the cost of the service. It only works on Kindles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What it does NOT do well:<\/strong>\u00a0open formats such as EPUB. If you buy books from sources other than Amazon (DRM-free, Spanish digital bookshops, public libraries offering digital loans), you\u2019ll either have to convert the files or put up with certain limitations. What has changed compared to the 11th generation?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 12th-generation Kindle Paperwhite, launched in late 2024, is the most substantial update since the 10th generation. The key changes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larger screen (from 6.8\u2033 to 7\u2033)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The increase from 6.8 to 7 inches seems small on paper, but you really notice it when using the device. More text per page, fewer clicks to turn the page \u2013 better for dense texts such as essays or academic books. The resolution remains at 300 ppi (print resolution), so the quality per pixel remains the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pages that are 25% faster<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Amazon promised \u00abthe fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever\u00bb and, for once, it\u2019s not just marketing hype. Turning pages, opening a new book and browsing your library is noticeably snappier than on the 11th generation model. For anyone upgrading from an older Paperwhite, the improvement is immediately noticeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greater contrast<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The new screen improves the contrast between the background and the text. The text appears darker and the background lighter. It may seem like a minor change, but after hours of reading, your eyes will thank you for it \u2014 especially in low light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12-week course (previously 10 weeks)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

An extra couple of weeks\u2019 battery life. In practice, this means charging the Kindle four times a year instead of five. Negligible for everyday use, but useful for long journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

USB-C (formerly Micro-USB)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

At last. You can charge your Kindle using the same cable as your mobile, AirPods Pro, iPad or laptop. Goodbye to Micro-USB, which was only ever used for the Kindle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
