Best noise-cancelling headphones: which ones to choose depending on your needs

Best noise-cancelling headphones: Bose QuietComfort Ultra and AirPods Pro 3 on an aeroplane’s tray table

The best noise-cancelling headphones depend on where you’re going to use them: over-ear headphones provide better isolation on a flight lasting several hours, whilst in-ear headphones are more comfortable for walking down the street. Noise cancellation also drains the battery. The Sony WH-ULT900N’s battery life drops from 50 to 30 hours when you switch it on, according to Sony. Here’s which model to choose for each use, along with their current prices in Tenerife.

How we put this comparison together

  • What we have compared: Active noise-cancelling (ANC) models available in our Playa de las Américas shop as at 7 October 2026, one or two per use and per price range. Two of the models that feature most frequently in other guides, the Sony WH-1000XM6 and the Sennheiser Momentum 4, are not in our catalogue and are therefore not listed here.
  • What criteria are used: style (headband or in-ear), battery life with noise cancellation enabled, compatibility with your mobile phone, features for use outdoors and at work (ambient mode, multipoint) and the price in Tenerife compared to the official price in Spain.
  • Based on what data: Official technical specifications from Apple, Sony, JBL and Samsung, and the product details on our website for the Bose models. We have not measured these ourselves. Figures and prices as at October 2026.
  • Business relationship: We sell all the models we recommend. That’s why we also show you when another official shop is selling them more cheaply.

What active cancellation involves and which type is right for you

Active noise cancellation uses microphones to detect external noise and generates a counter-wave that cancels it out before it reaches your ear. It works best with constant, low-frequency noises, such as an aeroplane engine or the hum of an air-conditioner, rather than with voices or sudden loud noises.

There are three things that should not be confused:

  • Passive insulation. It’s the physical seal: the headband cushion or the silicone tip on the in-ear headphones. It doesn’t use any battery power and helps with high-pitched noises, which the electronic component is least effective at blocking out.
  • Active noise cancellation (ANC). The one with the microphones. It’s the one that makes all the difference on a plane or on the underground.
  • Adaptive cancellation. ANC that adjusts automatically to its surroundings. JBL calls this «True Adaptive ANC» on the Live 770NC, whilst Samsung explains that the Galaxy Buds4 Pro adjust ‘ANC levels and ambient sound in real time’.

If your journeys are noisy and varied, adaptive ANC saves you from having to keep fiddling with your mobile. If you almost always use your headphones in the same place, a well-designed fixed ANC will do the job.

For air travel and long journeys

For flying, choose a pair of over-ear headphones with plenty of battery life: they cover the whole ear, provide passive noise isolation as well as active noise cancellation, and will last the whole journey there and back without needing to be recharged. A long flight with noise cancellation switched on the whole time is one of the scenarios that drains the battery the most.

These are the ones we have available:

  1. Bose QuietComfort Ultra (€399). This is the model featured in our catalogue, and its product details state up to 24 hours’ playback. Please note: Bose is now selling a second-generation model with different specifications. If you need to know the exact version, please ask us before you buy.
  2. Sony WH-ULT900N (129 €). Sony states a maximum of 30 hours with noise cancellation switched on and 50 hours without it. It’s the most affordable headband option on this list.
  3. AirPods Max 2 (€529). According to Apple, they offer up to 20 hours’ battery life with noise cancellation and spatial audio, and up to 1.5 times more noise cancellation than the previous generation. They make sense if you already use an iPhone, iPad and Mac.
  4. JBL Live 770NC (€149.99). They last for 50 hours with ANC, so they’re also suitable for travelling, although we’ve included them in the ‘work’ section because of their multi-point capability.

Are you going to sleep on the plane? A headband can be uncomfortable if you rest your head to one side. In that case, in-ear headphones with a good seal are less uncomfortable, even if they don’t block out as much noise.

For the street, transport and everyday life

To get around town, in-ear headphones with an ambient mode are best: they’re compact, fit in your pocket and let outside sound through at the touch of a button. Crossing the road with noise cancellation set to maximum isn’t a good idea, and with ambient mode you can hear a car or an announcement at the station without taking your headphones off.

  • AirPods Pro 3 (239 €). Apple says which eliminate «up to twice as much background noise as the AirPods Pro 2», with up to 8 hours’ battery life with noise cancellation and ambient sound mode enabled. They’re the obvious choice if you have an iPhone.
  • Samsung Galaxy Buds4 Pro (€249). With noise cancellation switched on, they last up to 6 hours, or 26 hours with the charging case, according to Samsung. They work best with a Galaxy mobile.
  • Bose QuietComfort Earbuds Ultra (€319). The product specifications state up to 6 hours per charge and up to 24 hours with the case. They’re the alternative if you don’t want to be tied to either Apple or Samsung.

If you’re deciding between the standard AirPods 4 and the AirPods 4 with noise cancellation (€179), we explain this in detail in Which AirPods to choose.

For work and making calls

For long days spent on the phone, look for a comfortable headset with multipoint connectivity, which allows you to connect to two devices at the same time. That way, you can switch from your laptop to your mobile without having to re-pair anything every time a call comes in.

The JBL Live 770NC (€149.99) have multipoint functionality according to the JBL fact sheet, which states in its table 50 hours with ANC and 65 without it.

The noise cancellation you hear and the noise cancellation that filters your voice during a call are not the same feature. We explain this in the FAQs.

iPhone or Android: why the choice matters

If you have an iPhone, AirPods get the most out of your phone. If you have a Samsung, the same goes for Galaxy Buds. They work with other phones, but you’ll miss out on some of the automatic switching and system-based adjustment features.

If you have headphones from both brands at home, or if you switch brands frequently, go for models that aren’t tied to a specific ecosystem: the Sony WH-ULT900N, JBL and Bose headphones can all be set up via their own app on both iPhone and Android.

Headband or in-ear: which provides better noise isolation?

A snugly fitting headband provides better isolation from low-frequency background noise than in-ear headphones, as it covers the entire ear and combines this passive isolation with active noise cancellation. In-ear headphones compensate for this with the seal provided by the silicone tips: with the correct size, the difference is reduced.

In practice:

  • For the aeroplane and the office, a headband.
  • For out and about, at the gym or if you wear glasses for long periods, in-ear.

If you’re unsure about the size of the tips, try them on before your trip, not on the plane.

How much do noise-cancelling headphones cost in Tenerife?

In the Canary Islands, IGIC is paid instead of the VAT charged on the mainland, but that doesn’t mean all models are cheaper: it depends on the model and the brand. Here is a comparison with the prices on each brand’s official online shop in Spain (Apple, Samsung, JBL and Sony), as at 7 October 2026:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use noise cancellation without listening to music?

Yes. You can activate noise cancellation without playing any audio and use the headphones simply to block out noise – for example, to sleep on a flight or concentrate in an open-plan office. They still use up battery power, as the microphones and processing are still running.

How much battery does noise cancellation use?

It depends on the model, but the difference is noticeable. The Sony WH-ULT900N go from 50 to 30 hours with noise cancellation switched on, according to Sony, and the Galaxy Buds4 Pro from 7 to 6 hours per charge, according to Samsung.

Are ENC and ANC the same thing?

No. ANC reduces the noise you hear. ENC reduces the noise picked up by the microphone during a call, so that the person listening to you can hear you more clearly, but it doesn’t isolate you. Some cheap headphones advertise ENC but don’t have ANC: check the product details before buying.

How do you activate noise cancellation on the headphones?

It depends on the model: almost all of them can be activated using a button or a touch gesture on the earpiece itself, as well as via the manufacturer’s app on your mobile. On AirPods, you can also switch it via the Control Centre on your iPhone. Many models have three settings: noise cancellation on, transparency mode (which lets outside sound through), and off.

Are there any good noise-cancelling headphones for under €100?

Yes. Among those we have available for you, the Samsung Galaxy Buds3 FE (€99) feature adaptive active noise cancellation and a transparency mode, according to their product details, and the JBL Wave Buds 2 (€59.99) also feature ANC. They’re in-ear headphones, so they’re better suited to everyday use than to a long-haul flight.
