GoPro Hero 13 Black: an honest review and comparison with the Hero 12 and rival models
The GoPro Hero 13 Black is an incremental upgrade on the Hero 12 – not a revolutionary one. But the small improvements add up: self-detecting HB interchangeable lenses, a new Enduro battery, built-in GPS, Wi-Fi 6 and improved compatibility with magnetic accessories. This review tells you whether it’s worth the price, whether it’s worth upgrading from a Hero 12, and when to choose it over the Insta360 X5 or DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro.
The key point in a sentence
The GoPro Hero 13 Black remains the best action camera for sports, with clear guidance (skiing, surfing, cycling, snorkelling). Its HyperSmooth 6.0 is the most reliable stabilisation on the market, its ecosystem of accessories is unrivalled, and its compact size makes it the most versatile. But if you shoot a lot of immersive or vlog content, the Insta360 X5 will give you greater creative flexibility for a similar price.
Price at Macys Digital Tenerife: €389

What has changed compared to the Hero 12
The Hero 13 is not as revolutionary as the Hero 9 (which completely changed the design). It is a refinement of the Hero 12 with four specific improvements:
1. HB interchangeable lenses with auto-detection
The Hero 13 is compatible with the system HB with interchangeable lenses which the camera automatically detects and adjusts the processing for. Available lenses include the Macro Lens Mod (for close-up photography, up to 11 cm), the Anamorphic Lens Mod (cinematic widescreen format), the Ultra Wide Lens Mod (177° field of view) and ND filters for a cinematic look.
For serious creators, this is a real game-changer — you no longer need a different camera for every situation. For casual users, the entry-level models do the same as the Hero 12 without lenses.
2. New Enduro battery (1,900 mAh)
The new battery 1,900 mAh battery It offers 23% more capacity than the standard Hero 12 battery and maintains better performance in cold conditions (down to -10°C without any significant loss of battery life). When recording at 5.3K/30fps, it provides approximately 1.5 hours of continuous use. At 1080p/30fps, it lasts up to 2.5 hours.
Compatibility: The Enduro batteries for the Hero 13 are NOT compatible with the Hero 12 or earlier models. The connector has changed. If you have old Hero 12 batteries, they won’t work.

3. Built-in GPS and data overlay
GoPro had removed the GPS from the Hero 11 but has brought it back in the Hero 13. You can now overlay data onto your video: speed, altitude, distance travelled and GPS route. Useful for cycling, skiing, motorcycling and sports where metrics matter.
4. Wi-Fi 6 and Quik
Wi-Fi 6 enables data transfers to your mobile that are five times faster than with the Hero 12. Combined with the improved Quik app, exporting clips for social media is noticeably quicker.
5. Compatibility with magnetic mounts
A new magnetic mounting system that complements traditional mounting points. Faster to switch between mounts (helmet → handlebars → chest) without having to unscrew anything.
Hero 13 vs Hero 12: is it worth upgrading?
| Feature | GoPro Hero 12 | GoPro Hero 13 |
|---|---|---|
| Top video | 5.3K at 60fps | 5.3K at 60fps |
| Photo | 27 MP | 27 MP |

| Submersible | 10 m | 10 m |
| Interchangeable lenses | ❌ No | ✅ Yes (HB system) |

| Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi 5 | Wi-Fi 6 |
| Magnetic mounts | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |

Should I upgrade from Hero 12? Only if you’re going to use interchangeable lenses, GPS or need the new magnetic mounts. If you’re only filming with the standard lens, there’s no noticeable difference in image quality or stabilisation between the Hero 12 and Hero 13.
Upgrade from Hero 11 or earlier? Yes. The Hero 12 was already a significant step forward (HyperSmooth 6.0, 5.3K, improved image processing). The Hero 13 builds on that.
Should I upgrade from the Hero 9 or 10? Definitely yes. There’s a noticeable difference in stabilisation, image quality, battery life and processing.

GoPro Hero 13 vs DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro
DJI has been improving its Osmo Action range for years, and the 5 Pro is the first model to pose a serious challenge to GoPro:
| Feature | GoPro Hero 13 | DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Top video | 5.3K at 60fps | 4K at 120fps |
| Sensor | 1/1.9″ | 1/1.3″ (larger) |
| Screens | OLED display at the front + LCD display at the rear | Front OLED + rear OLED |
| Battery | 1,900 mAh | 1,950 mAh |
| Autonomy | ~1.5 hours over 5.3K | ~2 hours in 4K |
| Stabilisation | HyperSmooth 6.0 | RockSteady 3.0 |
| Submersible | 10 m | 20 m without casing |
| Built-in microphone | Well | Better (with AI noise cancellation) |
| Accessories ecosystem | The widest | Well, but less so |
DJI wins in: larger sensor, OLED display on both sides, battery life, deeper water resistance (20 m), better built-in audio quality.
GoPro comes out on top in: stabilisation (still the best), a vast range of accessories, proven reliability in extreme conditions, superior colour processing in HDR.
If you record a lot of vlog-style content where the front-facing camera and audio are important, DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro It’s the best choice. For pure sports action and maximum compatibility with accessories, the GoPro Hero 13 is still the winner.
Who is the GoPro Hero 13 Black aimed at?
It’s perfect if:
- Do you take part in action sports? (surfing, cycling, skiing, snowboarding, motocross)
- You travel and go snorkelling or recreational diving (10 m without casing)
- You are a content creator which requires the best stabilisation
- You’ve already got some GoPro accessories from previous generations (compatible with Hero 13)
- Do you want a plug-and-play camera? no learning curve
It is NOT for you if:
- Are you looking for a serious camera? — the photo quality is fine, but a modern mobile phone takes better photos
- Do you record a lot of immersive content or 360° vlogs? — The Insta360 X5 will give you greater flexibility
- Its main use is for static vlogs — The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has a better screen and audio
- You won’t be using either durability or stabilisation — you’re paying for features you won’t use
Essential accessories
Buying a GoPro without accessories is like buying a car without petrol. Three accessories that are well worth the investment right from day one:
Spare Enduro battery (~€35): The battery runs out sooner than you think. Having a spare one doubles your recording time.
microSD card, V30 or higher (32–64 GB): Slow memory cards cause recording errors at 5.3K. Buy a good one.
Support tailored to your specific needs: Chest mount (Chesty) for POV, handlebar mount for bikes, helmet mount for skiing or motorcycling. Without the right mount, the camera stays at home.

The advantage of Tenerife
The Canary Islands charge 7% IGIC, compared with 21% mainland VAT or 20% UK VAT. With the GoPro Hero 13, the difference is noticeable:

|---|---|
| GoPro.com Spain | ~429€ |
| GoPro.com UK | £400 (~470€) |
| Amazon ES | ~409€ |
| Macys Digital Tenerife | 389€ |
For British tourists, buying it in Tenerife saves you around €80 compared to the price in the UK. It easily falls within the duty-free allowance of £390 / €430.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the GoPro Hero 13 record underwater without a case?
Yes, it is waterproof to a depth of 10 metres without an additional case. For deeper dives (up to 60 metres), you’ll need the official diving case.
How long does it record for before it heats up?
At 5.3K/60fps, the camera can record continuously for around 30–40 minutes before pausing due to overheating (at an ambient temperature of 25°C). At 1080p or 4K/30fps, it does not overheat during normal use.
Does it work with AirPods or Bluetooth headphones for external audio?
The Hero 13 supports an external microphone via the Media Mod adapter (Bluetooth audio suffers from latency). For professional audio, consider the GoPro Media Mod.
Is it compatible with GoPro Hero 11 or 12 accessories?
Yes, almost all of them. The mounting system (mounting fingers) is compatible from the Hero 5 onwards. Exception: Hero 11/12 batteries do NOT work in the Hero 13 (different connector).
Does HyperSmooth stabilisation work in water as well?
Yes, the stabilisation is electronic and works in any environment. In water, bear in mind that the camera is moved more by the current — the stabilisation does not compensate for extreme movements.
Is it worth buying the previous generation (Hero 12) when it’s on offer?
If you can find the Hero 12 for €100 less than the Hero 13, then yes. It’s an excellent camera – the same image quality, without interchangeable lenses or GPS, but perfectly capable for recreational use.
Verdict
GoPro Hero 13 Black — 9/10
The best action camera for sports in 2026. Unrivalled HyperSmooth 6.0 stabilisation, a vast range of accessories, interchangeable HB lenses that open up real creative possibilities, built-in GPS and a new Enduro battery with improved performance.
It only loses one point for two reasons: it isn’t a significant step up from the Hero 12 (if you already own one, there’s no rush to upgrade), and for users who create static vlogs, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro has a better screen and built-in audio.
At €389 at Macys Digital Tenerife, it’s still the action camera we recommend as our top choice tourists, casual sports enthusiasts and content creators.
The GoPro Hero 13 Black and all official accessories are available at Macys Digital, in the Parque Santiago 3 shopping centre (Playa de las Américas, Tenerife).
