Best value-for-money tablet 2026: complete buying guide
Buying a tablet in 2026 is more confusing than ever. iPad Air, iPad Pro, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Xiaomi Pad, Kindle Paperwhite, PocketBook… Every brand tells you its model is the best. In reality, the “best” one depends on what you want it for. This guide tells you what to buy and why, with up-to-date real prices in Tenerife.
The question to ask before looking at prices
Before comparing models, answer this: what are you going to use the tablet for?
- Just reading books → you don't need a tablet, you need an e-reader. Cheaper, easier on the eyes, weeks of battery. Skip straight to the e-readers section.
- Watching and browsing (Netflix, social media, the web) → a mid-range tablet. You'll find excellent options under €400.
- Studying and taking notes → an iPad Air or a tablet with a stylus. Apple Pencil + iPad is still the most polished combination on the market.
- Professional work (design, editing, heavy productivity) → an iPad Pro with M5. It's the only one that can replace a laptop for creative workflows.
- A bit of everything → an iPad Air. It's the balance most people need.
If you've read this far and still don't know what you want, you probably want an iPad Air. It's the right answer 70% of the time.
E-readers: when all you need is to read
If your goal is reading books, and nothing else, an e-reader is objectively better than any tablet. Three reasons:
E-ink screen. It doesn't shine light into your eyes like an LCD or OLED screen. You read as if on paper: no eye strain, no impact on your sleep and no glare in the sun.
Weeks of battery life. A Kindle lasts 8-10 weeks on a single charge. A tablet lasts 8-10 hours. On holiday or a long trip, that's the difference between forgetting the charger and hunting for plugs.
Weight and size. A Kindle Paperwhite weighs 205 grams. An 11″ iPad Air weighs 462g. After an hour of reading in bed, the Kindle won't tire your hand.
The options that matter here
Kindle Paperwhite 7″ 12th gen (€179 in Tenerife) The default choice. 7-inch screen, 300 ppi, IPX8 water resistance (read by the pool without worrying), 16GB for thousands of books, up to 10 weeks of battery. Its Amazon integration is the best on the market: you buy, download samples and sync with your phone. If you use Kindle Unlimited or already have a library on Amazon, this is the one for you.
PocketBook Era 7″ 16GB (€249 in Tenerife) The premium alternative with an open ecosystem. It reads EPUB without conversion (Kindles can't open native EPUB files without workarounds), plays audiobooks over Bluetooth and supports 19 file formats. It's the e-reader to choose if you want independence from Amazon or buy your books from other stores.
PocketBook Verse PB629 8GB (€99.99 in Tenerife) The budget option. If you just want to read and don't need water resistance or a big screen, this reader does the job for under €100. 6-inch screen, built-in light, weeks of battery.

Budget tablets: when price comes first
Under €300 you'll find tablets for watching and browsing (video, the web, books, social media) with no big productivity ambitions.
Samsung Galaxy Tab A series: the most reliable Android option in this range. Decent screens, standard Android and 4 years of software updates from Samsung. For family use, kids or watching shows on the sofa.
Xiaomi Pad / Redmi Pad: the best value for money on Android. Big screens, surprisingly good sound, solid battery. The software is less polished than Samsung's, but the price makes up for it.
Base iPad (10th/11th gen): from €379-449. If you can stretch to it, the base iPad beats any Android tablet in its range. Better screen, better processor, 6+ years of software support and better resale value.
The trap to avoid: unbranded Android tablets under €150. Poor screens, slow software, no updates, disappointing battery. You're better off paying €250 for a Samsung than €120 for an unknown brand.
Mid-range: where most people land
iPad Air 11″ M4 128GB (€619 in Tenerife) The tablet we recommend to 70% of the people who ask us. M4 chip (laptop-level power), 11″ Liquid Retina display, works with Apple Pencil Pro and Magic Keyboard, 12GB of RAM. It handles watching, studying, basic design and light video editing. It will comfortably last you 5-7 years.
iPad Air 13″ M4 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular (€999 in Tenerife) The big version. If you'll use the tablet to take notes in class, draw or work with apps side by side, the 13 inches make a real difference. The Cellular version adds 5G, which is useful if you work on the move without relying on Wi-Fi.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S10: Samsung's answer to the iPad Air. AMOLED screen (better for video and photos), S Pen included (versus the Apple Pencil, sold separately for ~€140), and Android with DeX for desktop-style work. If you're coming from Android and don't want to move into the Apple ecosystem, it's the best alternative.

The professional range: iPad Pro with M5
iPad Pro 11″ M5 256GB (€1,049 in Tenerife) iPad Pro 13″ M5 256GB (€1,379 in Tenerife)
If you do professional creative work (video editing in Final Cut, design in Procreate, technical illustration, podcasting or music production), the iPad Pro M5 is the only iPad that justifies its price over the Air. Here's why:
- Tandem OLED display with 1,600 nits HDR, 2,000,000:1 contrast and 120Hz ProMotion. The best screen on any portable device available right now.
- M5 chip with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. More powerful than many laptops, and it replaces a MacBook for creative workflows.
- 16GB of RAM (on the 256GB model), optimised for Apple Intelligence and heavy multitasking.
- Thunderbolt 5 for connecting external drives and monitors, and for fast transfers.
If your use is 80% watching + 20% work, you don't need the Pro. The Air gives you 95% of the experience for €400 less.
The advantage of buying electronics in Tenerife
The Canary Islands charge 7% IGIC instead of the 21% VAT on mainland Spain or the 19-21% in most of Europe. On expensive products you can feel the difference:
| Product | Apple Store Spain price | Tenerife price (Macys) | Savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPad Air 11″ M4 128GB | 729€ | 619€ | ~110€ |
| iPad Air 13″ M4 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular | 1.179€ | 999€ | ~180€ |
| iPad Pro 11″ M5 256GB | 1.249€ | 1.049€ | ~200€ |
| iPad Pro 13″ M5 256GB | 1.589€ | 1.379€ | ~210€ |
| Kindle Paperwhite 16GB | 169,99€ | 179€ | -€9 (no real difference) |
On products under €200 (like the Kindle) the tax saving is marginal: the gap between VAT and IGIC on small amounts isn't worth the trip. IGIC makes a real difference from €400-500 upwards, where the Apple Watch Ultra, iPhone Pro, MacBook Air, iPad Air and iPad Pro start saving you €100-300 per unit.
If you're coming from outside the EU and taking the tablet back home, remember that the customs allowance is €430 per person (by air). A base 11″ iPad Air fits easily within one person's allowance; for pricier models it makes sense to split the purchase between two travellers' allowances.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it worth buying a tablet instead of a laptop?
For watching, reading, studying with handwritten notes and digital drawing, yes. For writing long documents, coding, office work or anything that needs a physical keyboard, no: get a laptop. The most common mistake is buying an iPad Pro thinking it will replace a MacBook. For most jobs, it won't.
Is an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy Tab better?
If you're already in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone, Mac), the iPad wins hands down on integration. If you're coming from Android and want to stay compatible with your Samsung Galaxy or Pixel, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is the right choice. For everything else, the iPad ecosystem has better support for professional apps.
How long should a decent tablet last?
A well-looked-after iPad lasts 6-8 years with iOS updates. A top-of-the-range Samsung Galaxy Tab, 4-5 years with updates. Unbranded Android tablets, 1-2 years before they slow down.
Is the Cellular (SIM) version worth it?
Only if you'll use the tablet on the move without reliable Wi-Fi. If you work from home, the office or cafés with Wi-Fi, the Cellular version adds ~€150 you won't get back. If you're a digital nomad or travel a lot, it's worth it.
Does the iPad come with an Apple Pencil?
No. The Apple Pencil Pro costs ~€140 extra, and the Magic Keyboard another €350+. When comparing prices between an iPad and a Samsung Galaxy Tab (which includes the S Pen), remember to add the accessory if you'll use it.
